8/11/08 - Glacier National Park, Montana

We drove into Glacier National Park and got a campsite (without any hookups). We drove to the visitor center and walked down to Lake McDonald to take pictures. Our campground is near Lake McDonald at the west side entrance. We decided to tour part of the park. It was in the afternoon when we started and didn’t have time to see everything. We stopped at McDonald Falls and then went to McDonald Lodge which dates back to the 1930’s. The park has refurbished limos that date to the 30’s that are run by propane. You can rent them for tours -- they hold about 15 people or so. We continued on to Trail of the Cedars which is a one mile loop that is handicap accessible and off that is a 4 mile round trip trail to Avalanche Lake that we hiked. At the end of the trail is a really beautiful lake with 3 waterfalls flowing down the cliff side. After supper we went to the ranger talk at the amphitheater near the lake -- there was a guest speaker from the Blackfoot tribe who gave a speech intertwined with songs.
