7/11/08 - Between Trinidad and Orick, California

This morning David and Lorna had to leave to go back to Orinda because their daughter Karen was coming for a visit with a friend. We drove to an RV park between Trinidad and Orick near the entrance to the Redwood National and State Parks. We stopped on the way and had beers in Eureka at Lost River Brewing and in Trinidad at 6 Rivers Brewing. The road we used (299) to get to the coast from Redding became progressively smokier due to the forest fires in Whiskeytown NRA and the surrounding areas. It became very scary at one point. The smoke was brownish red and very thick and we could hardly breath. We expected the firemen we saw to turn us around at any moment. After setting up at the RV park we drove to the ocean and watched the sunset.
